S5:E6

This post contains spoilers so if you have not watched the latest episode, airing 1/16/2022, read with caution.

On tonight’s episode of Before the 90 Days, we saw more of the couples we’ve come to know in the previous episodes of this season and we were also introduced to a new couple — or, at least, one half of it.

As is to be expected from this franchise, there was drama, tears, lies and betrayals, and more drama. So, let’s dive into a recap.

Caleb and Alina

“I took a ride on his disco stick… literally.” Oh, Alina.

So, this couple finally broke the sexual tension and did the deed, and the producers felt the need to go into deep detail with just how they did it.

Last week’s episode saw them making out hot and heavy and seemed to indicate they would go all the way, but I’m not alone in feeling like the filmed makeout session was a bit cringe. It just went on for entirely too long and while I acknowledge we watch these shows partly for the voyeuristic nature of them, that really just felt like too much.

It also feels like the show puts way too much emphasis on their sex life. I mean, we get it… people are curious about how a little person and an average height person have intercourse, but it starts to feel exploitative at points.

Of course, a little person can and should be sexual as much as they want. And yes, the show is notoriously famous for getting all into the intimate business of the cast members (that is what they sign up for), but something about this one just feels kind of… icky.

Usman and Kimberly

And of course, we see Usman “aka Sojaboy” and Kimberly (Kimbaaaaly) still deciding if this “potential” is going to become something more.

“Which Usman shirt am I going to wear today?” Kimberly, each morning as she gets ready for the day.

But as she arrives at the photo shoot before Usman and his crew, she has some strong opinions about how things are organized and arranged. Or rather… at the lack of organization.

Usman’s song is all about his ex-girlfriend, Zara, but Kimberly doesn’t know this. Yet, the song is literally named after her… He says he really cared for Zara but she was jealous of his female fans and ultimately broke it off with him.

Usman says he brought Kim to the photoshoot as a bit of a test to see if Kimberly can handle his career or if she will get jealous.

His “team” seems to be really unorganized as they show up for the photoshoot and Kim says so, which the rest of the crew doesn’t seem to appreciate very much. Although everything she says is 100% on point, I don’t think the unsolicited advice was welcomed.

But it did seem like Usman’s feelings for her had grown stronger by the end of the night. I suppose she passed the test.

Mike and Himena

Himena’s lies just keep unfolding. Last week she announced to Mike that she cannot have any more children, due to a permanent procedure after she had her last child. Although it seems like she had a very good reason for having the procedure, there isn’t any good reason for her to hide this very important information from Mike.

She takes him to the coffee growing area for some alone time, and they are still struggling to communicate since they don’t speak each other’s language, but Mike has his phone and trusty translation tool, so it’s all good.

Mike confronts Himena about not telling the truth before he came to visit her in Colombia about how she can’t have kids. He had expressed to her how important this was to him.

The big question on viewers’ minds is: Does Himena really love Mike or is she just afraid of losing him because he supports her financially and he’s good with her kids?

“I lived with a hitman.” The bombshell confessions from Himena just keep coming. I will definitely be curious to see if this couple finds a way to actually make it to a marriage.

Which brings us to another couple whose wedding might be in jeopardy…

Hamza and Memphis

This couple… oh boy. Memphis is quickly becoming one of the main villains of the season with the way she behaves. Is she really evil, or just misunderstood?

The level of disrespect these two paid to Hamza’s mom knows no bounds. Fans were outraged (but not really very surprised) that the two hooked up in the bedroom against his mother’s wishes, right under her own room. And they were stupid enough to get caught because Hamza fell asleep in there instead of going back to the couch.

What does this week bring?

“I have a problem. I have to poop,” Memphis reverts to toddler-speak as she struggles to communicate with her boyfriend, Hamza, and as her stomach apparently struggles to adapt to the new culture and diet.

Hamza begins to ask her some questions about her past, which is a very sensitive topic for Memphis, but she does begin to open up about some things. She shares how her mother used to have a problem with drugs, but “she is better now”.

She shared some vulnerable info about her mom and her past and Hamza seemed to be supportive.

And then later in the episode, Memphis finds out Hamza lied to her about his age. What else has he lied about? Well, that seems to be the big question on Memphis’ mind right now, too.

Gino and Jasmine

Merry Christmas, here’s a toothbrush!

This was definitely not the present Jasmine was looking for, and she makes it very clear to Gino that she is disappointed. Last week we saw it all unfold on Christmas morning and on this episode, we get the conclusion.

He comes with her to the gym while she does her workout, but seems to just talk her ear off while she’s trying to concentrate. Then she tells him that since he made a mistake by not giving her a Christmas gift, she’s going to get something for herself and make it expensive.

Then she guilts and manipulates him into agreeing to her $2,500 gift by saying he has had more expensive trips with the women he was with before.

But then she launches into an attack on “all the stupid things” he has in his house that are related to his ex-wife. And apparently, she wants him to paint his house because the colors are “stupid”.

Jasmine has another meltdown. No surprise there… but this one earns her a 10/10 on the Drama Scale.

She then says that she deserves to pick the colors because she has f*cked him more in three days than his ex did in seven years. But Gino calls her on her inappropriate comments and tells her she doesn’t need to say things like that.

“You her lawyer, or what Gino?”

But Jasmine doesn’t take well to Gino checking her on her attitude. This sends her into a full-blown hissy fit and she storms off crying and screaming. Oddly, Gino remains calm throughout the entire outburst.

And seeing her in true pain, I actually feel sympathy for her. (I know, I know… don't come for me). I actually completely understand why she is hurting, I just think the reaction is inappropriate. I think she needs some therapy to deal with her feelings regarding people who have hurt her in the past and with managing her intense emotions in a healthier way.

Honestly, it becomes painful to watch her break down and it starts to feel exploitative. But again, that’s the nature of shows like this, I suppose.

Ben and Mahogany

And now for our new couple. Our introduction is this guy using a caliber to measure his body fat and then asking the producer how much he thinks he weighs. The fitness model, Benjamin, has not been introduced in this season before this episode but we get to know a bit about him, his religious past, and how he met Mahogany on social media.

There’s a 28-year age difference, but Ben is sure they are soulmates. He believes God has led them to one another but his children and his ex-wife, Lisa, are not so sure.

When one of his daughters calls Mahagony’s picture “fake”, he says, “Maybe she has a really good camera”.

But something does smell fishy about this whole thing.

They’ve never video chatted yet, and his friends are convinced she’s a catfish and that their pal Ben is being scammed.

Ben admits that she asked him for a loan and that he gave it to her. He also admits that he has been catfished before and that the woman he was talking to was actually a man from Africa. But he insists he knows she is real and that their connection is very real.

I suppose we’ll see…

S5:E6 Recap

So, that was a lot for one episode, yeah?

But next week, more secrets will be revealed. Which couples will make it through and which ones will call it quits?

Do you have a favorite couple on this season? Is there a couple you just love to hate? Let me know in the comments.
